How We Collect and Compare Prices
Basketr crawls product listings from all 10 supermarkets daily using their websites and public APIs. We collect the shelf price, any promotional or loyalty card price (Tesco Clubcard, Sainsbury’s Nectar, Waitrose myWaitrose, Morrisons More Card), pack size, and unit price.
To compare fairly, we match products across stores using barcodes (EAN codes) where available, and fall back to name-similarity matching with brand and pack-size validation. This means when you see “Tesco vs ASDA,” we’re comparing the exact same products — not just category averages.
The “cheapest on” ranking counts how often a store has the lowest effective price (after loyalty discounts) for each product available at two or more retailers. A store “winning” on 20% of items doesn’t mean it’s 20% cheaper — it means it has the best price on 20% of comparable products.
UK Grocery Market in 2026
The UK grocery market is worth over £230 billion annually, with the “Big Four” — Tesco, Sainsbury’s, ASDA, and Morrisons — holding roughly 65% market share. Discounters Aldi and Lidl continue to grow, now accounting for around 18% combined.
Loyalty pricing has become a major battleground. Tesco Clubcard prices, launched in 2020, now cover thousands of products with exclusive discounts. Sainsbury’s followed with Nectar Prices, and most other supermarkets have introduced similar schemes. For shoppers without loyalty cards, the true cost of a weekly shop can be significantly higher than advertised.
Online grocery shopping represents around 12% of total grocery sales. Ocado and Iceland both offer delivery-only models, while the Big Four and Waitrose operate both physical stores and delivery services. Price comparison tools like Basketr help shoppers see through promotional complexity to find genuine value.
